Ducted VS ductless Range Hood

In most exhaust hoods, a filtration system removes grease (the grease trap) and other particles. Although many vent hoods exhaust air to the outside, some recirculate the air to the kitchen. In a recirculating system, filters may be used to remove odors in addition to the grease.

What Are Ducted Range Hoods?

Ducted hoods are fairly common, although some kitchen designs may limit where they can be installed, due to the fact that these hoods need to be able to move the air out of the kitchen.

In this way, they are restricted as to where they can be placed in the kitchen.
A ducted range hood must be connected to a duct with pipes that carry the airborne particles away from the kitchen to the outdoors. This is what differentiates it from a ductless range hood, which instead just recirculates through a filter and then back into the kitchen.
If you choose to go with a ducted hood, you’ll need to have the proper ducts installed to move the dirty air and particles out of the kitchen completely. Ducted hoods are quite common in commercial kitchens, but depending on your kitchen and cooking habits, this kind of hood might be just what you need for your new home range.

What Are Ductless Range Hoods?

A non-vented or ductless range hood has a fan but no duct. Instead, it uses several types of filters to clean the air and then recirculate the air into the kitchen (these models also know as recirculating range hoods).

A ductless range hood also call is ventless range hood can be mounted anywhere, which saves money. It’s also more practical if you’re renting. Since they don’t need to vent to your home’s exterior, you’ll have the freedom of placing your stove anywhere in the room.

These hoods operate by filtering the air they suck in and then blowing it back out into the room, essentially using a recirculation process. The filter often contains activated carbon or charcoal which helps to remove odor and smoke particles from the air, which can then be cleanly recirculated back throughout the kitchen.

With this option, it’s important to change your filters every few months to ensure the hood performs effectively.

The best ductless range hood with a charcoal filter for most effective.

How Does A Ductless Range Hood Work?

The first, fumes rise from food cooked on the range top, the hood collects and funnels them to the center of the unit.

Then Electric fans mounted inside the unit pull the fumes in and move them. Then, greasy fumes produced by cooking will pass through the mesh or baffle filters that will trap grease and cooking particles.

Next, the air is pushed through a charcoal filter (carbon filter), which will suck the rest grease, heat, smell, and smoke, filter it, and the last circulate it back into the kitchen.

Why Do You Need The Ductless Range Hood?

While some homeowners may feel a ducted range hood is a more efficient choice, purchasing a recirculating range hood also referred to as the best ductless range hood has its own set of advantages. So If you are remodeling your kitchen, what makes it the best? The following are some of the top benefits of recirculating range hoods.

Affordable and easy to install.

A ductless hood has the advantage versatile and can be installed just about anywhere you want. Because a ductless range hood merely filters and then recirculates air throughout the kitchen, you do not need to worry about installing it near any pipe or ducts that reach the outside.

The operation cost of a ductless range hood is substantially lower than a ducted range hood because it requires easy installation. The ducted range hoods involve a complicated installation process, particularly those with ducts that vent the air outside. All of this takes time and money.

With ductless range hoods, the only annual cost to the customer is the filter(s). This price ranges from $30 to $90 per year which is much less than a ducted range hood installation cost.

Environment-friendly

The steam, heat, and smoke that are produced in your kitchen won’t be released outside of your kitchen. The ductless range hood with charcoal filter sucks up most of these particles and filter them. In essence, it’s a form of air recycling. This means no harmful fumes or vapors are released into the environment.

Suited For Remodeling Projects

During a kitchen remodel if you choose to relocate your stove’s position, but you don’t already have the duct in your kitchen, it can be expensive (or sometimes impossible) to install one. Also, the location of the duct dictates where your range will be placed in the room—a duct run that’s too long or twisty is less effective (You may have to add a booster fan in these cases.) combining the price for patching up the holes left by a ducted hood with the cost of building a new venting system is not cheap. On this times the best ductless range hood is perfect for choose.

Aesthetic design

The ductless range hood doesn’t occupy much space either, sometimes it can be utilized to add some vibrancy to the room. Some homeowners even paint the hood so that it won’t look out of place in the kitchen.

How to Choose The Best Ductless Range Hood?

Every consumer will have different needs, options, and priorities that will determine which ductless range hood is the best buy for you. These are the most important factors to keep in mind during your search.

Best Ductless Range Hood for Your Budget.

The first factor when choosing the best ductless range hood is cost. Some of the factors that influence price are predictable: larger range hoods will typically cost more than smaller ones. Slick, contemporary stainless steel hoods typically sell for a much higher price than other models. Island and wall mount hoods are some of the most expensive types available, while under cabinet vent hoods are usually the most affordable options, and those with extra features or that are designed to be especially stylish will usually cost more as well.

Your budget will constrain the level of functionality and appearance you can expect from a ductless range hood

What Size of Ductless Range Hood Do You Need?

The Ductless range hood needs to cover the entire area of the range top to capture emissions from all the burners, so measure the size of your range before you start shopping.

Careful planning of your wall cabinet layout in relation to your base cabinets may allow you to leave a space for your vent hood at least 3″ wider on each side than the range top. So if your cooktop is 30”, A 36” range hood would overlap three inches.

For ductless island range hood, you’ll want it to be a little bit large because it’s going to have to compete with the cross breezes in your kitchen make sure any island hood overlaps 3” to 6” on each side. It’s important to have this overlap because of the large canopy area of your hood the better it can trap unwanted grease heat smoke odor and vent it out of your kitchen.

This extra width will carry off much more of the fumes and make your kitchen ventilation that much better.

Charcoal Filters and Grease Traps.

A standard ductless range hood will include two-part is Grease trap and filter.

Grease traps are designed to catch the grease that is suspended in the fumes rising from your cooktop. These are two types of traps are in widespread use: Mesh, Baffle.

Aluminum or stainless steel mesh traps are the most common and can be very effective. However, they need frequent cleaning to prevent clogging, thus reducing airflow.

Baffle filter traps are often chosen because of their “professional” appearance but they are actually better because they trap more grease while they do not block or reduce airflow.

Both Mesh, Baffle trap too easy cleanup by the dishwasher or clean up more fasted with the pressure washer, but if you don’t care, your Grease trap will break down.

The charcoal filter is usually made of charcoal and their purpose is to absorb cooking smells. They do need changing, frequently or less so, depending on the amount of cooking you do.

Someone recommend the use of charcoal filters or grease traps, but with the ductless range hood owning both Charcoal Filters and Grease Traps will be most effective for the best recirculating range hood.

What Level Noise Do You Want for Your Ductless Range Hood?

You could choose an extremely powerful oven hood, but if it sounds like a small aircraft taking off every time you use it, it’s probably not worth it.

All range hoods generate noise, as they must utilize powerful fans to move the air. This noise level is generally reported in “sones,” a unit of perceived loudness. The loudest sone rating appropriate for home use is about 4. Higher sones numbers indicate louder levels of volume.

Whenever possible, take the hood for a test run in the showroom or store before you bring it home.

Power (CFM) – How To Calculate The CFM for A DuctlessRange Hood

The rate at which range hoods cycle air is usually measured in cubic feet per minute, or CFM. Your ideal CFM rating will depend on your kitchen size. The true effectiveness of a ductless range hood will be largely determined by its filter quality, not how much air it moves. Although this rating is much more important for ducted hoods that actually exhaust air design, the ductless range hood with proper strength will be good for value. Below are several different ways to calculate the CFM for a ductless range hood.

First, you need to measure your stove or cooktop. Then you need 100 CFM for every 12″ of stove width.
For example a 30″ stove (2.5′) x 100 CFM=Approx. 250 CFM needed, as a minimum.

But we can’t just stop there…

You need to keep the room size in mind.  Larger rooms need more CFM to clear the cooking odors away.

A range hood should exchange the air in the kitchen 15 x per hour. If your kitchen is 11′ x 14′ and 12′ high, that equals 1,980 cubic feet. To find the size of fan needed, multiply the cubic feet x the # of air exchanges (15) then divide by 60 (minutes in an hour).
In our example that would be: 1,980 x 15 = 29,700 divided by 60 = 495.  You need 495 CFM minimum for this size of the kitchen.

Not yet.  Gas ranges deliver a lot more heat than electric ranges.  So we need to take this into consideration. Most gas burners put out approx. 10,000 BTUs per burner.  Multiply that by the number of burners, 6 shown here = 60,000 BTU Then divide by 100 to find the minimum CFMs needed. In this case 600 CFM.

Now, we are finished.  Take the rating for the stove width (250 CFM in our example),  room size (495 CFM minimum), burner type (600 CFM minimum). The highest number is 600. So you would need a total of 600 CFM for this range size, kitchen size, and range burner.

Height From The Range Top

For maximum exhaust performance, range hood manufacturers recommend installing the hood about 30 inches above the cooktop surface. If you plan to install the hood any higher than that (many cooks do), you’ll need more airflow and therefore a more powerful hood. Another way to improve the hood’s effectiveness is to buy a hood that extends beyond the sides and front of the cooktop (and beyond the back in the case of an island installation).

Other feature to consider for the best recirculating range hood.

Effectiveness:

A Range Hood can only be effective if it is “on” and running when the range top is first turned on. It is not capable of clearing an already smoke-filled kitchen.

Speed Control of your range hood:

Preferably choose a hood with variable speed control that allows you to infinitely control the fan, similar to a dimmer switch; or choose a multispeed control with at least three settings, + On/Off. Some range hoods also have variable or multi-stage light control.

Gauge and quality of Steel:

I am sometimes asked about the gauge of steel in range hoods but it is really not relevant. Unlike a sink that gets a lot of banging about, a range hood is quite ok with relatively lightweight gauges of 18 – 24 (lower is thicker) because its manufactured shape give it sufficient rigidity until it is permanently installed. Most stainless steel hoods are brushed to match your other appliances. Grade 304 is most often used because it has higher chromium and lower carbon content that provides for excellent resistance to corrosion.

Positioning:

If you can avoid it, do not plan for your cooktop and range hood within three feet of an open window. The hood will draw air in from the window and interfere with proper functioning of the hood.

Safety:

Possible burning of the hood or adjoining cabinets.

Conclusion

There is no doubt on the fact that a ductless range hood provides lots of benefits by keeping your atmosphere clean and healthy with minimum cost and labor to install. But not all the ductless range hood is made with such tremendous quality.
